EL LABERINTO DEL FAUNO, BY GUILLERMO DEL TORO, TO OPEN SITGES 06

The festival will be honouring David Lynch on the 20th anniversary of Blue Velvet

The International Film Festival of Catalonia will be kicking off its 39th edition with the premiere of El Laberinto del Fauno, by Guillermo del Toro. In addition, this Mexican director will be the protagonist of a Special Focus on his filmography.

Sitges 06 will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the premiere of Blue Velvet at the festival, with a review of David Lynch’s universe and the Spanish premiere of INLAND EMPIRE.

The Official Fantàstic Selection will be marked by several content lines:

European genre movies: Classic and new filmmakers demonstrate that the fantasy genre has solidly established itself and is enjoying great prestige, with titles like The Science of Sleep, by Michael Gondry, 13 (Tzameti), by Gela Babluani or Taxidermia, by György Pálfi.

Oriental Film: Sitges 06 will once again highlight the importance of the genre from the East, including films in the official selection as well as dedicating a whole category to it with Orient Express. The Host, by Bon Joon-hogong or Time, by Kim Ki-Duk will be competing in Fantàstic.

Animation: With an increasingly greater presence at international competitions, animation has, in addition to its prominence in the Anima’t category, a specific role in the official selection, with films like Princess, by Anders Morgentahler or Renaissance, by Christian Volckman.

National Films: Once again this competition will include eagerly awaited works by national filmmakers like Los Abandonados, by Nacho Cerdá; La hora Fría, by Elio Quiroga and the co-production The Ungodly, with the participation of Catalan producer Jordi Rediu.

Official Première will be presenting, out of competition, important American and European productions that will be premiering soon, outstanding films like The Wicker Man, by Neil LaBute; A Scanner Darkly, by Richard Linklater or the Spanish La Caja Kovak, by Daniel Monzón.

Noves Visions continues in the line of movies that are markedly from the fantasy genre, using new formats and very daring narratives. Such is the case with Avida, by Benoît Delépine and Gustave de Kervern or Interkosmos, by Jim Finn.

Orient Express, dedicated to Asian genre film, will be including titles like Election II, by Johnnie To; Re-cycle, by the Pang Brothers or Dragon Tigre Gate, by Wilson Yip. In addition, we will be programming a special on Bollywood movies, with the screening of Camino a Bollywood, in collaboration with the Catalan company 16:9 and the blockbuster Paheli, that will be attended by some it its actors and actresses.

Anima’t will be demonstrating this genre’s great production and will be dedicating a retrospective to classic Czech and Slovakian animation. In addition, Spanish participation will be highlighted with De profundis, by Miguelanxo Prado.
