Enfin vu via le beau BR d'Artus Films cette histoire qui est une excuse pour lier une belle succession d'images gothiques (le prêtre maudit, l'enterrée vivante, les larmes de sang, etc.). Et pour une fois, j'ai préféré regarder le film en VF, avec un doublage (d'époque je dirais) qui passe bien.

S'il est question de Dunwich, point de Lovecraft ici, tout comme malgré la tentative de voguer sur le succès des morts-vivants, il s'agit plutôt d'apparitions qui tuent (le titre Frayeurs se ainsi suffit à lui-même).

A des moments, c'est du n'importe quoi, comme Bob avec sa poupée gonflable, le journaliste qui passe son temps à fumer le cigare en toutes circonstances, et surtout la médium qui veut absolument faire une pause restaurant avant de foncer sauver le monde.

Les plus :
- La mise en scène est unique. Fulci, c’est le Sergio Leone de l’horreur. Ses zooms, ses gros plans sur les yeux, ses mouvements de caméra... c’est incomparable. Pour moi, c’est le maître absolu de l’atmosphère morbide.
- Ambiance glauque de malade mental. Je ne sais pas si vous avez déjà senti l’odeur de la mort, mais City of the Living Dead (ou Frayeurs en français) est ce qui s’en rapproche le plus au cinéma.
- Les maquillages des morts-vivants sont irréprochables, et les effets gore sont inoubliables : les tripes vomies par la bouche, la scie circulaire... On est dans le viscéral pur. Il faut rendre hommage à Giannetto De Rossi, maître des effets spéciaux et du maquillage gore.
- Un autre hommage s’impose à Fabio Frizzi. Sans sa musique funèbre et envoûtante, le film n’aurait pas cette aura si particulière. La bande originale du film me prend littéralement aux tripes... (désolé).
- Et puis... pauvre John-John !

Les moins :
- Oui, je sais, l’histoire n’a ni queue ni tête. Le film ressemble à une succession de scènes cauchemardesques. Mais peu importe la cohérence : à chaque visionnage, je me laisse embarquer dans une autre dimension.

C’est mon Fulci préféré, alors je ne vais pas lui chercher des poux. Je l’ai découvert grâce à la VHS René Château, et elle m’a littéralement traumatisé étant jeune. Depuis, je le revois régulièrement, et à chaque fois je suis happé par cette ambiance mortuaire, étouffante, annonçant ni plus ni moins que la fin du monde.

À propos du 4K Arrow : Je dois avouer que certains passages m’ont un peu dérangé à cause du grain, trop variable d’une scène à l’autre. Je pense me procurer le Blu-ray de chez Blue Underground pour comparer. Par contre j’ai trouvé le doublage anglais moins naze qu'à l'habitude.
