Visiblement, les problèmes que Verhoeven a rencontré pour trouver un financement concernant l'adaptation de son bouquin controversé sur Jesus sont finis.
Non seulement Roger Avary aurait accepté d'écrire le scénario, mais le plan de financement serait bouclé (via la société qui avait mis sur pied American Psycho).
Pour mémoire, sa version du Christ fait abstraction des miracles, de l'immaculée conception, de la résurrection, que Verhoeven ne croit pas s'etre déroulés. Pire : Jesus serait le fruit du viol de sa mère par un soldat romain, un fait qui seriat "monnaie courant à l'époque", qu'il était en fait un illuminé qui exorcisait à tour de bras.
En clair, s'il arrive à faire son film "ca va chier".

Paul Verhoeven est l'un de mes cinéastes préférés. J'espère que le film se fera selon sa vision.

Il faut préciser que Verhoeven est chrétien : à mon avis son film ne sera pas fait pour railler les chrétiens, mais plutôt pour se rapprocher de la "vérité historique".
Cela dit, il a déjà fait un film sur le sujet avec ROBOCOP

Paul Verhoeven est athée. Il le disait clairement dans une interview de 2010 où il expliquait clairement vouloir faire une bio de Jesus d'un point de vue historique et non théologique :

EMPIRE: There are two real points of comparison, I suppose: Scorsese's The Last Temptation Of Christ, and Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ. What did you think of those?

VERHOEVEN: My portrayal of Jesus' life will be much more realistic and much more historical. Scorsese's film was based on the book, which is a fantasy. Certainly not close to any reality of Jesus. It was something that the Greek writer of the novel essentially invented. A Jesus who makes crosses for the Romans, well, it's nonsense. I wouldn't do any of that. I just want to go for what is historically, sociologically and politically real. We couldn't have a scene of Jesus praying at Golgotha when everyone else is sleeping. I mean, how could we have a report of that when everyone's sleeping? That's a contradiction in the text already. So all those will be eliminated.

EMPIRE: Then there was Mel Gibson's film ...

VERHOEVEN: I felt that it had no meaning. It seemed to be saying that the more blood is shed the more we are purified. I mean, honestly, such a thing is not possible. Nobody is purifying anybody else. It's impossible. The Church, not knowing how to handle the death of Jesus, this idea had to be presented. It is the ultra-fabrication. I don't know how so many people have been able to believe it for 2,000 years. It's amazing! They say, "He's the Son of God", and you ask yourself, "What the fuck do you mean?". Son of God? I mean, God fucked who?

EMPIRE: So your project is corrective to the religious right in America?

VERHOEVEN: Yes. Well, it's corrective to 2,000 years of Christianity.

EMPIRE: They might not want to be corrected.

VERHOEVEN: Well, they should. The Church has caused enough misery. I don't know what the title will be, but the tagline should be something like "Getting Jesus Back!".

EMPIRE: Are you religious?

VERHOEVEN: No. I don't have a religion. I'm not baptised. I'm not a Christian.

EMPIRE: So what interests you about Christ?

VERHOEVEN: I don't know. But I've been interested for a long time. From my 20s, really. I was interested in black magic and the occult, and then started to be interested in miracles. (laughs) My view was always, "Well, this is impossible; in fact, it's self-contradictory". So I became interested in what exactly happened, how this situation came about. And the historical facts: what time did he get up, and so on. I feel like Hercule Poirot investigating Jesus!
