In addition, the actor hopes to be wearing Freddy’s striped shirt again by the end of next year. “New Line Cinema has commissioned two scripts: One is Freddy vs. Jason and Michael Myers, or Freddy vs. Michael Myers, I’m not quite sure how that works,” Englund reveals. “The other one is a prequel; apparently it’s not that prequel script that’s been floating around for several years, it’s something new. They will select one of those two [projects].”

"New Line is committed to making at least one more Freddy movie. They have commissioned both a prequel and "Freddy vs. Jason vs. Michael Myers". No word on which one they will actually make or when."
"New Line made "Nightmare on Elm Street: Real Nightmares" a reality show that I hosted in which contestants described their nightmares and then were challenged to confront their fears by being put in a situation that evoked their nightmares. For example: a woman scared of clowns was locked in a fun house and terrorized by clowns who appeared out of mirrors and down through the ceiling, etc. For whatever asinine reason they decided not to air it. That's all I know. Oh, it could possibly air on the new CW network. "

Well, reliable sources just confirmed to me that Terry Gilliam has accepted a contract that would put him in the director’s chair for the 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' prequel. He’s accepted the contract on terms that surrealist David Lynch is to write the “screenplay” and act as a creative consultant. Gilliam, who’s had major problems getting studio backers for his films on account of his renegade ways, thinks this will help regenerate trust and stability for him within the studio system. “It’s a big project to be sure, it’s a popular project, I want to infuse my own style and sensibilities [into it] and have total control, which the studio has allowed, but I also want to stay true to the series, I’m a fan.” News of this has been kept quiet for a while but Gilliam assures us that they’ve been in talks for a while and were working out every detail they could to insure success, profit, and a film with cinematic merits.
David Lynch factors into the equation through Gilliam’s demand on how he wants this film executed, “I’ve already spoken to David, he’s agreed to the terms, we feel the story is already there for us to use, it writes itself, it’s there, we want to use it and develop it. It’s all in the execution. To tell the story, we want to show what hasn’t been shown before. You know, it’s really what goes on in the minds of these people. You have a psychopathic child molester and murderer, what goes on in his mind? What does he see when he glares over at these children moments before doing something despicable to them? What do the children see? Will they see Freddy the way we know him today? Or do they see something worse? This will be a huge part of the film, a child’s mind is delicate, it’s an innocence only valued when you’re a child. It’ll be a really surreal film. David is great at that, and I’ll work from that and add my own sensibilities into the mix, it’ll be a darker film.”
Other comments made by the eccentric director pit Johnny Depp in one of the roles for the film. Gilliam has worked on a couple of films with Depp in the lead including his failed Don Quixote project. “Johnny…you know, I’d put him in any of my films. [Laughs.] If he wants to do it he’ll be involved somehow. He was in the first film and I’d like him to play his own father actually. You know, one of the members of the group of parents who burned this psychopath alive. He’ll be a much younger looking father than in the original but that’s to be expected.” Freddy fans can breath a sigh of relief knowing their icon will be back and played by the same actor Robert Englund, “You can only do it with Robert. Robert is Freddy and the role can’t be recast. I’ve talked to him over the past few days and he sounds delighted to be taking this series in a new direction. He’s happy about not having to wear the makeup as much, but I did warn him about the different possibilities, it’ll be a surreal film. He’s the one and only Freddy and I can’t turn away a fan of the Pythons anyway. [Laughs.] Hopefully the fans will enjoy it.”
Mind you none of this has been confirmed but it certainly raises an eyebrow because rumors have been swirling that Depp is being considered for the lead for years. David Lynch writing a script for a movie that centers around nightmares? Count me in. Man, I hope this isn't too good to be true.
First it controlled her mind, then it destroyed her body... Long live the new flesh!
