
"James Doohan, best known to Starlog fans as Cheif Engineer Montgomery Scott from the STAR TREK TV series and Movies, passed away around 5:30 am this morning July,20, 2005 -- according to local CBS news reports.
Doohan was 85, and had been battling Alzheimer's and heart disease for some time.
He had a long career, begining in Canada after serving in their Air Force in WWII. He began in live radio, and became known as a man of many voices and accents.
In 1953, he was a regular of the CBS's live science fiction show SPACE COMMAND, playing the part of Phil Mitchell, a crewman of a ship that was part of a international mission to explore outer space.
Eventually, he made the move to Hollywood and character roles in films (BUS RILEY'S BACK IN TOWN), and in television shows such as VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. In fact, he was offered the part of the Cheif Petty Officer of the Seaview, but choose to accept the role Mr. Scott on STAR TREK instead.
He continued to work in films and television, including the live action Saturday Morinng show JASON OF STAR COMMAND in 1978-79.
He recorded books and provided voices for video games in later years and became a fan favorite on the convention circuit with many funny stories and observations.
He was honored with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year.
