Revamped 'Ali' Has Political Punch on DVD

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Director Michael Mann (news) has revised his biopic "Ali," starring Will Smith (news), for Tuesday's release of the double-disc DVD "Ali: The Director's Cut."
Mann removed about 20 minutes of the original film and put in about 30 minutes of never-before-seen footage for the new "Ali: The Director's Cut" DVD feature.
"Simply put, this is a different version of the film," Mann said. "The theatrical version also was a director's cut and that's what I wanted. But this DVD version has a different emphasis, much of that emphasis focused on the political climate of the times and Ali's place in those times and, especially, in Africa."
In 1974, boxing legend Muhammad Ali knocked out George Foreman for the heavyweight world championship title in the first such fight to be held in Zaire.
"In this new version of the film we focus on the political conflicts of the time, such as the CIA (news - web sites) presence in Africa, when Ali was there in '74," Mann said. "In this version we pay more attention to the things that were happening during the 1960s, when Ali was center stage with the likes of Malcolm X. Also, more attention is paid to Ali's religious opposition to the war in Vietnam, among other political events that both shaped Ali, and that were shaped by Ali."
Sony's "Ali: The Director's Cut" DVD also sports a new "making-of" documentary, which tells the story of the film process, as well as Smith's own struggle to embrace the spirit of Ali and not merely the boxer's larger than life persona, Mann said.
"Their came a turning point in my character's development when I met Ali for the first time," said Smith, who received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the pugilist.
"Ali walked into the gym and I glanced into Michael's eyes and then I just went off on Ali," Smith said. "I yelled, how dare you get in my face in my gym and... it just kinda flowed from there. That's when I first thought I just might be able to pull this off."
While no cameras were rolling during the initial meet between Smith and Ali, Mann said that some of that on-set interplay is in the new documentary, along with interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of Smith, Jon Voight (news), who plays Howard Cosell, and Mario Van Peeples, who plays Malcolm X.
The DVD bonus disc also contains new audio commentaries by Mann and Smith, along with several other added value features.

J'ai vu aucune des 2 versions et je veux rattrapper cette lacune. A votre avis, laquelle des 2 versions est la meilleurs ? La cinéma ou la director's cut ? Je verrai sans doute les 2 mais pour un premier achat, laquelle conseillez vous ?
Manifestement et pour rappel, pour la director's cut, Mann a enlevé 20 minutes et ajouté 30 autres minutes à son film. Le film dans cette nouvelle version serait aussi beaucoup plus accès "politique"...
Alors ? Est-ce que la version cinéma contient aussi des sous titres Francais ??

Du coup ma motivation toute fraiche retombe un peu... Je sais pas lequel prendre... J'ai juste lu 2 avis qui sont contradictoires et surtout qui viennent de critiques qui n'en sont pas vraiment :
* MadMovies (de ce mois-ci) qui dit le director's est pas bien, ça ramoli etc...
* DVDRama qui dit qu'il est top mais que le film était top. C'est top mais différent quoi.
Du coup, ch'uis coincé avec ces critiques pipo...

Le Z2 oui c'est sûr. Au pire tu peux choper la version ciné d'occasion et plus tard le Z1. Mais faut savoir que l'image du Z2 a mauvaise réputation, trop sombre et légèrement recadrée je crois!

C'est pour ça que je n'envisage même pas le zone 2 : Image médiocre et zoomée sur tout le film...

OK alors je viens de checker sur dv-depot et apparemment il y a bien des sous-titres fr sur les 2 versions, et même une piste française 5.1 sur la version ciné.
